Cal Volleyball to Hold Blue and Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage

Aug. 19, 2008

BERKELEY - The California volleyball team will host its annual Blue and Gold intrasquad scrimmage at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. Admission is free and doors open at 6 p.m. as the Golden Bears simulate a full-match experience. Fans are invited to attend the warm-up session preceding the scrimmage.

Cal will open the season with the No. 5 ranking in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll. The fifth spot is the highest-ever season-opening ranking for the Bears and marks the eighth time in school history that Cal will open the season ranked; the sixth time since head coach Rich Feller arrived on campus.

The Bears welcome back eight letterwinners to a team that advanced to the NCAA national semifinals last season, posting the most successful season in Cal history with a 26-8 overall record. All-American junior outside hitter Hana Cutura leads the team to the court this season along with a trio of seniors in outside hitter/middle hitter Morgan Beck, middle hitter Kat Reilly and outside hitter Am'ra Solomon. The Bears also return Pac-10 All-Freshman setter Carli Lloyd and the starting defensive specialist/libero in junior Kristen Kathan. Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Meagan Schmitt and junior middle hitter Mindi Wiley will also contribute to the 2008 squad.

Joining the returning Bears this Saturday will be five freshmen, led by outsider hitter Tarah Murrey. As a Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 selection, Murrey brings along an impressive resume that includes being honored as the 2008 Gatorade California Volleyball Player of the Year. Hailing from Plano, Texas, middle hitter Shannon Hawari joins Murrey in the freshman class and also received Fab 50 recognition from Volleyball Magazine. The Bears also gain the services of setter Kristin Obermeyer, defensive specialist/setter Ashley Roe, and defensive specialist/libero Katherine Gorman with the arrival of the 2008 freshman class.
