Cal Baseball Scores Seven Runs in the Eighth to Defeat LMU, 11-6

Feb. 8, 2003

Box Score

BERKELEY, CA - Cal exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by freshman Allen Craig's grand slam, to defeat Loyola Marymount, 11-6, Saturday at Evans Diamond. Cal improved its record to 4-2, while the Lions fell to 0-2.

For the second day in-a-row, the Bears rallied for an impressive comeback against Loyola Marymount. Cal had given up five unearned runs in the top of the first inning, but slowly came back, scoring two runs in the second, a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh.

Then in the eighth, sophomore James Holder forced in a run with a bases loaded walk, and senior Ben Conley later had a one-out RBI single to tie the game, 6-6. After Conley's game tying hit, Craig followed with a towering shot over the left field fence for the grand slam. The Bears finished the inning with another run on a Chris Grossman RBI double, scoring Brian Horwitz, who had followed Craig's grand slam with a triple.

The winning pitcher for the Bears was junior Brian Montalbo (1-0), who pitched 3.0 innings with two hits, no runs, three walks and two strikeouts. The losing pitcher for Loyola Marymount was reliever Ryan Yurek (0.3 inning, four hits, four runs, one walk, one strikeout).

David Nicholson, Conley, Craig and Horwitz all finished with two hits apiece for Cal. Jonathan Higashi led the Lions at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Joe Stoeber had a RBI triple for Loyola Marymount in the first inning.

The Bears will next host Loyola Marymount in the third-game of the three-game series, Sunday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal had defeated the Lions, 5-4, on Friday.
