Meet the Staff & Volunteers

The Sports Medicine Program includes a head team physician and a number of consulting physicians and other health professionals who specialize in sports medicine as well as a staff of full-time certified athletic trainers. Members of our sports medicine staff also have vast experience dealing with a wide range of athletes, from the elite collegian to the Olympian to the professional athlete.

The Sports Medicine Program serves 27 intercollegiate sports, with over 900 student-athletes. An integral feature of our program is our staff of acclaimed medical professionals representing all areas of sports medicine. These individuals help cover athletic events, perform pre-participation physical exams, and staff the Intercollegiate Athlete (IA) clinics at the Tang Center and in the training rooms. We would like to recognize and thank them for their valuable services to our student-athletes and our entire program.

Will Callahan, MD, joins us as this year's fellow in Primary Care Sports Medicine after finishing his Family Medicine Residency at the University of Washington this past June. Dr. Callahan is a graduate of Virginia Tech ('97) and The University of Virginia School of Medicine ('04). His appointment is jointly between UC Davis and UC Berkeley, and he currently resides in Sacramento, CA.

Cindy Chang, MD, has served as head team physician for Cal's 27 athletic teams since 1995. Prior to coming to Cal, she was an assistant team physician for Ohio State and an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at OSU's College of Medicine. Chang is recognized as one of the leading primary care sports medicine physicians in the country. She has published articles and contributed to textbooks in sports medicine, and is a frequent presenter at national medical conferences. She was an elected four-year member of the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM), and has also served on the Medical Education Committee for the American College of Sports Medicine. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the AMSSM Foundation. In addition, Chang worked at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and was part of the USA medical team for the Winter Paralympic Games in Nagano, Japan, in 1998 and in Salt Lake City in 2002. She will be serving as Chief Medical Officer for the USA delegation at the 2007 Parapan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro in August. As an assistant clinical professor at UC Davis and UC San Francisco, Chang remains actively involved in the education of medical students, residents and fellows. She was the 2003 recipient of the AMSSM Founders Award, given to a sports medicine physician who demonstrates outstanding professional achievement and service to the community. After earning both her bachelor's ('84) and medical ('89) degrees from Ohio State, Chang completed her family practice residency at UCLA before returning to Ohio State for a fellowship in sports medicine. She and her husband, Chris Hudson (Cal '88), live in Berkeley with their daughter, Carlin, and son, Joseph.

Bill Coysh, PhD, joined the University Health Services in 1983 and is currently the assistant athletic director of Cal Sports Medicine. He supervises the athletic medicine area, is involved in the day-to-day management of the program, and is actively engaged in sports psychology.

Sameer Dixit, MD, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff as an associate team physician in the summer of 2006. He recently completed a two year fellowship in primary care sports medicine at UCLA. Dr. Dixit graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland medical school. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. He currently resides in San Francisco.

Shelly Pratap, administrative assistant, joined the Cal Sports Medicine Staff in July of 2007, after years of experience in administration and health care. Coming most recently from UC Davis Health Systems, Pratap has worked in radiology and information services and brings expertise in all aspects of health care. She is actively involved in helping to coordinate services, diagnostic testing, and scheduling for Cal student athletes. Currently she resides in Dublin with her two sons, Richard and Nathan.

Harris Masket, MD, first joined Cal for post-graduate sports medicine training in 2004 and is currently the chief of urgent care at University Health Services and an associate team physician. Dr. Masket graduated from Cal ('93) and George Washington University Medical School ('99). He completed a primary care-internal medicine residency at Alameda County Medical Center in 2002. Dr. Masket was a sports broadcaster at Cal on KALX from '89-'91. He worked at the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Urgent Care from 2004-05 and at Summit Hospital as a hospitalist from 2003-05. Dr. Masket resides with his wife Sirena and daughter Delilah in Oakland.

Chris McLean, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and a liaison to the Cal Sports Medicine program in Counseling & Psychological Services. He received a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1993 and has worked at University Health Services since 1994. In his position he has counseled student-athletes on a wide range of personal and performance related issues and provided mental health consultation to athletics personnel. He has also led numerous workshops and designed a career planning class for Cal student-athletes.

Jeff Nelson, MD, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff as an associate team physician and staff physician for University Health Services in the fall of 1999. However, he has been involved with the Cal Sports Medicine program since January of 1998, as a sports medicine fellow with the combined UC-Davis/UC-Berkeley Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Nelson is a graduate of Cal ('86) and Dartmouth Medical School (`90). Prior to his residency training in Family Practice at UC-Davis, he served as a flight surgeon for the US Navy. In addition to his work at Cal, Dr. Nelson also has a private practice at the Center for Sports Medicine in Walnut Creek. He resides in Albany.

Dan Westbrook, administrative assistant, began working for UC-Berkeley in 1998 and joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in 2002. Westbrook coordinates benefits and processes bills related to Cal sports injuries. He is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in creative writing at San Francisco State University.


Certified Athletic Training/Physical Therapy Staff:

Lanny Bradford, MS, ATC, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff in the fall of 2006, and is the head athletic trainer for the football team, and also works with the women's golf team. Bradford graduated from Iowa State University in 1998 with a degree in exercise and sport science. In addition, Bradford earned his master's degree in higher educational administration from Purdue University in 2000. Prior to arriving at Cal, Bradford served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Purdue University from 1998-2000, an assistant athletic trainer at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, IA from 2000-2002, and an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ from 2002-2006. Bradford, originally from Hugoton, KS, currently resides in Oakland.

Ann Caslin, MA, ATC, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff in the fall of 2005 as an assistant athletic trainer. She currently works with the women's tennis and women's basketball teams. Caslin earned her bachelor's of science degree in both kinesiology and physical education with an athletic training option in 1996, and a single subject teaching credential in physical education in 1997 from California State University, Hayward. In addition, Caslin earned her master's of arts degree in human performance/athletic training from San Jose State University in 1999. Prior to her arrival at Cal, Caslin served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Stanford University from 1997-99, and as an assistant athletic trainer at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN from 1999-2005. Caslin is a California Bay Area native and currently resides in Albany.

Ryan Cobb, MS, ATC, returned to Cal in the summer of 2003, after a previous five-year career at UC-Berkeley, and became the head athletic trainer of the Cal Sports Medicine program in early 2004. A native of Atlanta, GA, Cobb graduated from Vanderbilt University ('97) in Nashville, TN. He initially came to Cal in 1997 to complete his graduate assistantship, and he was hired full time after completing his master's degree in exercise physiology at the California State University, Hayward. Cobb departed Cal in 2001, leaving for his alma mater, Vanderbilt, and was then the head athletic trainer at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, CA. Awarded the Athletic Trainer of the Year by the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. He is responsible for coordinating the Athletic Training Services for all of Cal's 27 Varsity Teams directly with the Cal Gymnastics programs and Men's Golf Program. Cobb and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Danville.

Ellen de Neef, PT, began working with the Cal Sports Medicine program in 2005. She received her physical therapy degree from the physical therapy school SUPA, Academy for Physical Therapy, located in Utrecht, The Netherlands. She worked for several years in pediatrics and orthopedic clinics before joining the University Health Services physical therapy staff in 1995. De Neef has completed post-graduate training in orthopedic and manual therapy, and hand rehabilitation. Her clinical interests include manual therapy, sports medicine, ergonomics, and hand rehabilitation.

Elaine Garcia, MS, ATC, CSCS, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff in 1999 and currently serves as assistant athletic trainer for men's and women's track & field. She also coordinates the student-intern program at Haas. Garcia received a bachelor's degree in physiology from UCLA in 1993 and a master's degree in sports health care from the Arizona School of Health Sciences in 1997. Garcia has experience working at the high school, junior college, and university levels. She also served as the women's head athletic trainer at Fullerton College in 1998 before coming to Cal. In addition to being a certified athletic trainer, she is a certified strength and conditioning specialist.

Michael J. Granado, PT, ATC, CSCS, joined University Health Services and the Cal Sports Medicine program in 2006. He received his bachelor's degree in exercise science with an emphasis in exercise physiology from UC-Davis in 1998. At UC-Davis, he also received training in sports medicine and eventually became a certified athletic trainer. Granado then graduated in 2001 with masters in physical therapy from California State University, Long Beach. Prior to Cal, he worked as a manager for several physical therapy clinics in Marin County and the East Bay. Having completed a year long orthopedic manual therapy program and working for the 2003 World Gymnastic Championship in Anaheim, Granado has an interest in orthopedics, manual therapy, and sports medicine. Residing in San Francisco, he is a big Giants fan and has a black belt in Shotokan Karate.

Elise Hammond, ATC, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff as a graduate assistant certified athletic trainer in 2005. Her first two years at CAL, Hammond worked with football and women gymnastics; currently, she assists with track and field and cross country. In December of 2004, Hammond received her bachelor's degree from Oregon State University in exercise and sport science, with an emphasis in athletic training; she also completed minors in psychology and music. Hammond is pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology: sports psychology at California State University, Hayward. Born and raised in Berkeley, Hammond is excited to be home and have the opportunity to work with the Cal sports that she grew up watching.

Tony Hill MS, ATC, joined the University of California, Berkeley staff in March 2007, and will be working as the assistant athletic trainer with the football team. Prior to coming to Berkeley, Tony worked with University of Texas Longhorn football team. Tony received his Master's from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY where he completed his graduate degree in Athletic Training. In his research, he studied the intertester reliability of a lower extremity functional test. Clinically, Tony worked with the football team. Before his graduate assistantship, Tony interned with the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL working with the football and men's tennis teams. Tony completed his undergraduate education at Fresno State University in May 2003. He has also worked as a summer intern with the Miami Dolphins during the summer of 2002. Tony is originally from Salinas, CA. He married the former Mandy Bausman in June 2006, and they reside in Walnut Creek.

Barry Parsons, Med, ATC, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff in the fall of 2004 as an associate athletic trainer. He serves as the primary athletic trainer for men's basketball and men's crew. Parsons earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Kansas State University in 1999 and his master's degree in education from Converse College in 2003. Prior to working at Cal, Parsons was the assistant athletic trainer at Wofford College in South Carolina for five years, where he worked with football and men's basketball. While at Wofford, he also assisted the Carolina Panther's athletic training staff during their annual stay at the college for training camp.

Carol Rogers, MA, ATC, CSCS, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff in 1990 as head women's athletic trainer and held that post for two years until the merger of the men and women's athletic departments in 1992. In addition to her lacrosse responsibilities, she also works with field hockey. She previously served as the head athletic trainer at Santa Clara University from 1979-90. Rogers received her bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Massachusetts in 1977 and her master's degree in athletic training from the University of North Carolina in 1978. In addition to being a certified athletic trainer, she is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. She has one daughter, Emily.

Brian Schulman, MA, ATC, CSCS, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff as an assistant athletic trainer in the spring of 2004. He is currently the athletic trainer for baseball and men's water polo. Prior to arriving at Cal, Schulman was an intern assistant athletic trainer with the San Francisco 49ers for the 2003 NFL season. Schulman earned a master's degree at Fresno State in 2003 and served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the baseball and football programs. Also a certified strength and conditioning coach, he served as a summer athletic training intern for the Los Angeles Dodgers while completing his undergraduate degree from UC-Santa Barbara in 2001. He and his wife, Megan, make their home in Dublin.

Linda Smith, ATC, also known as "Smitty," joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff in October 1977 as an assistant athletic trainer, assistant women's basketball coach, and head women's junior varsity basketball coach. Despite a junior varsity record of 8-3, she found greater reward in working with a wider cross-section of student-athletes, and retired from coaching to devote herself to a career in athletic training. Smith is a Wolfpack alumna, having received a bachelor's of science degree in zoology from the University of Nevada, followed by two years as a graduate assistant there. She is currently responsible for the coverage of women's volleyball, women's crew, and men's tennis.

David Stenger, Med, ATC, has been a member of the Cal Sports staff since 1973. In addition to his duties as assistant athletic trainer with men's soccer, Stenger also works with the Cal rugby team, which has won 22 national titles over the past 27 seasons. Stenger joined the department after graduating from the University of Arizona with a master's degree in education. He earned his bachelor's of science degree from Ohio University in 1972. He and his wife, Patricia, make their home in Pleasant Hill with their two daughters, Meghan and Elizabeth.

Dave Walden, ATC, EMT, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff in the fall of 2004 as a graduate assistant certified athletic trainer. His primary coverage responsibilities are with men's and women's swimming, and women's water polo. Walden graduated in 2003 from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in history, and completed his athletic training internship at St. Mary's College in Moraga, and Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology at California State University, Hayward. In addition to his responsibilities at Cal, Walden also works with the California Storm, a semi-professional women's soccer team in Folsom, the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic of San Francisco, and Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek.


Strength and Conditioning Staff:

Mike Blasquez, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, joined the Cal Athletic Department in January of 2003. Blasquez spent the previous 10 years as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. He also served as the Director of Rehabilitation at Muir Orthopaedic Specialist in Walnut Creek, Calif. (2001-2003). Blasquez received his degree from CSUH in Kinesiology.

Henry Behrens is entering his 6th year as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. Before coaching, Hank was a member of the Cal football team until he experienced a career ending injury in '99. Hank worked for five years as a student assistant before being promoted to Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Nick Folker is an assistant strength and conditioning coach and joins us from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Folker is a graduate from the University of Hawaii, Manoa. While at Hawaii he was a 4-Time All-American and 3-TimeHonorable Mention All-American swimmer. Internationally he competed at the 1999 World University Games (Bronze medial), 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, 2001 World Championships, 2001 Goodwill Games (World All-Star Team) and the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Nick worked under famed swimming sprint coach Sam Freas while at Hawaii, as well as numerous top junior athletes in South Africa, including the SA U23 Triathlon Champion. Nick is currently working toward a Master's Degree in Kineseology at California State University, Hayward.

John Krasinski, who has more than 15 years of major college experience, enters his sixth season as Cal's football strength and conditioning coach in 2007. He was named a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa) in May of 2007 - the highest honor given in the strength and conditioning coaching profession. Prior to coming to Berkeley, Krasinski spent two years as head strength and conditioning coach at Northern Arizona. From 1996-2000, he was an assistant at Oregon, where he first met head coach Jeff Tedford. Krasinski's other stops have been at Colorado State (1993-96) and Rutgers (1991-92). Krasinski received his bachelor's degree in sports medicine from Montana State in 1990 and his Master's degree in exercise physiology from Oregon in 1998.

Ken Miller returns for a second year of service as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Cal football program. Miller also works with Cal's softball, women's golf and women's gymnastics teams. Prior to his work with the Bears, Miller logged over 10 years of work in the personal training and fitness field. He was a fitness manager in Oakland for two years prior to his arrival on campus, and spent four years as a consultant, providing education for trainers, therapists and health clubs. Miller also enjoyed a three-year stint as a corporate wellness instructor for the Department of Defense in Las Vegas from 1993-95. Miller earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science at Cal Poly Pomona, before earning his master's in exercise science and health promotion from California University in Pennsylvania.

David Ziemba joined the Cal strength and conditioning staff in the spring of 2006, bringing 15 years of experience in collegiate strength and conditioning training to Cal. Prior to moving to Berkeley, Ziemba worked as a sports performance coach in Michigan. Previously, he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Eastern Michigan from 2001-05. From 1996-2000, Ziemba was the head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Denver, coordinating the development of 19 intercollegiate sport programs. After earning his bachelor's degree in exercise and movement science from Oregon in 1989, Ziemba worked for one year as a graduate assistant coach at Northern Arizona. He returned to his alma mater in 1990 and served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Duck program from 1990-96. Ziemba earned his master's degree in exercise and movement science from Oregon in 1995.


Medical Volunteer Staff:

Robert Agee Jr., MD, joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in the fall of 2000. He assists with pre-participation physicals and IA clinics, and he is the lead team physician for Cal rugby. He was raised on the Presidio of San Francisco, and attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. Dr. Agee returned to California to train in family practice at UCSF-Fresno, then left again for a sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, AL. He serves as a medical consultant for NFL Europe, and has been providing coverage since 2000. Dr. Agee is head of the primary care sports medicine program at Kaiser, Walnut Creek.

Christina Allen, MD, joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in the fall of 2002, and assists with pre-participation physicals, IA clinic, and event coverage including women's soccer. She earned her biomedical engineering degree at Duke University in North Carolina and then attended the UCLA School of Medicine. She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency and sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She joined the faculty at the UCSF in September of 2002 as an assistant clinical professor in orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Allen also serves as an Orthopaedic National Team Physician for U.S. Soccer and U.S. Taekwondo.

Casey Batten, MD, joined the Cal Sports Medicine staff as our 2006-07 Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow in our joint UC-Davis/UC-Berkeley fellowship program. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Exercise Science (`99) and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin (`03). He then completed a family medicine residency at the University of Tennessee COM-Chattanooga Unit prior to starting his fellowship. Most recently, Dr. Batten joined the faculty at the UCSF department of orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine division.

Susan E. Bromley, DC, works with our Cal student-athletes in the stadium training room and during event coverage, including football. She graduated from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and has been in private practice in Union City since 1994. Her extensive sports chiropractic experience includes work with professional rodeo, NASCAR Winston Cup, the 2005 National Figure Skating Championships, and the international sports-chiropractic clinic at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She currently travels to cover USA Taekwondo at national events, and recently served at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Dr. Bromley has taught in three different chiropractic colleges and has accomplished certification as a Certified Sports Chiropractic Practitioner; she is also certified in advanced Graston Technique.

Lamont Cardon, MD, is an orthopaedic consultant for hand and upper extremity injuries. Dr. Cardon is a former Cal athlete who played football for the Golden Bears in 1984-86. After Cal, he attended the Chicago Medical School, and then completed his orthopaedic residency at the St. Lukes/Roosevelt hospital program in New York. His hand fellowship included a traveling fellowship with microsurgeons in Modena, Italy and in Hirosaki, Japan, followed by completion of the CVStarr hand surgery fellowship in New York. Dr. Cardon returned to the Bay Area in January 2000, and in addition to his private practice in Berkeley, Dr. Cardon provides physician coverage for IA clinics, pre-participation physicals and sporting events. He also staffs the Hand Clinic at San Francisco General Hospital and is a member of the teaching faculty in the Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF. He is a member of Orthopaedic Overseas and has volunteered in Bhutan and Cambodia.

Craig Dennis, MD, is a team physician with Cal, and joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in the fall of 2000. He assists with pre-participation physicals and event coverage, and has a special interest in water polo and rugby. After undergraduate studies at Iowa State University and medical school at the University of Nebraska, he completed training at Highland General Hospital in Oakland. Dr. Dennis is board-certified in emergency medicine and has been in active practice since 1973. He was a member of the swim team coaching staff at Miramonte High School in Orinda from 1989-99 and has served as the Golden Bear women's water polo club team physician.

Derric DesMarteau, DDS, has been involved with the Cal Sports Medicine program since 1998, providing emergency dental care, and fabricating custom mouthguards for our student-athletes. A graduate of UCLA, Dr. DesMarteau received his dental degree from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. In addition to his private practice in Piedmont since 1980, Dr. DesMarteau teaches cosmetic dentistry at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He is also the team dentist for the Golden State Warriors and the Oakland Raiders.

Tim Dutra, DPM, MS, FAAPSM, has volunteered at the IA clinic and pre-participation physicals as a podiatric consultant since the fall of 2002. He received his bachelor's of science degree at University of California at Davis, where he also played on the tennis team. He received his master's degree in kinesiology with a sports medicine emphasis at California State University, Hayward where he also served as a graduate assistant and athletic trainer. Dr. Dutra received his doctor of podiatric medicine degree from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1985. He completed his residency at Pacific Hospital in Long Beach and an AAPSM fellowship in podiatric sports medicine. He is in private practice in San Leandro and also serves as a assistant director of student health and staff podiatrist at the student health center at California State University East Bay at Hayward Campus. Dr. Dutra is a fellow of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, and currently is president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. He lectures nationally on podiatric sports medicine topics.

Robert Eppley, MD, has been involved with the Cal Sports Medicine program since 1990, and has been one of our primary orthopaedic consultants since 1992. In this role, he sees student-athletes at the IA clinic, covers events including football, and assists with pre-participation physicals. A graduate of Swarthmore and Case-Western Reserve University, Dr. Eppley completed his general surgery internship at Harvard and orthopaedic residency at Tufts University. After an additional sports medicine fellowship at Southern California Orthopaedic Institute, he entered private practice in Berkeley. Dr. Eppley is the president of the California Sports and Orthopaedic Institute and was repeatedly voted one of "Bay Area's Best Doctors" and "Best Doctors in America" by fellow physicians.

Sara Edwards, MD, joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in the fall of 2007, and assists with pre-participation physicals, IA clinic, and event coverage. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She then attended medical school and completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at Northwestern University. In 2006 she completed her shoulder, elbow and sports medicine fellowship at Columbia University in Manhattan. Dr. Edwards has authored book chapters and lectured at national meetings on orthopaedic shoulder and elbow topics. She is in private practice in Oakland.

Jennifer L. Forster, DC, has been with the Cal Sports Medicine program since fall 2006, providing student-athlete care at the Haas training room. She received her doctor of chiropractic degree at Life Chiropractic College West in 2003. Her clinical interests include biomechanical analysis and functional rehabilitation utilizing chiropractic and active release techniques for both athletes and geriatric patients. She has a private practice in Campbell, and also teaches senior balance therapy exercise classes.

Jessica Greaux, DC, has been with the Cal Sports Medicine program since 2004. She received her doctor of chiropractic degree at Life Chiropractic College West in 2001. She participated on the Brown University women's soccer team from 1991-1994 and has now taken an interest in triathlons. Her clinical interests include biomechanical analysis and functional rehabilitation while specializing in manual therapy techniques. She has a private practice in Berkeley, and provides student-athlete care at the Haas training room.

Joshua Hatch, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon on staff at Kaiser-Oakland, and joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in the fall of 2000, assisting with pre-participation physicals, IA clinic, and event coverage including football and men's basketball. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, his medical degree from Georgetown University, attended UCLA for his residency training, and went to the Hospital for Special Surgery to complete his fellowship in sports medicine. During his fellowship he assisted with the New York Mets, St. Johns University and The Public School Athletic League in New York City. Dr. Hatch grew up in the Bay Area and attended Los Gatos High School.

Patrick Hearne, DC, joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in 2006. He graduated from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo with a bachelor's degree in 1997 and then received his doctor of chiropractic degree from Life West Chiropractic College in 2004. He works with our Cal student-athletes at the stadium training room.

James Y. S. Ho, DDS, DMD, joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in the fall of 2005, providing emergency dental care, pre-participation exams, and fabrication of custom mouthguards for our student-athletes. As an endodontist (root canal specialist), he has expertise with dental trauma. A graduate of Cal ('92), Dr. Ho attended Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he earned his doctor of dental medicine degree. After dental school, Dr. Ho served as a hospital dentist and completed a general practice residency, then received his specialty training in advanced microscopic and microsurgical endodontics from the UCLA School of Dentistry. Since the completion of his training, Dr. Ho has been in private practice limited to endodontics and recently started his own private practice in Berkeley.

Roger Iliff, MD, a family physician, sees student-athletes at IA clinic, assists in event coverage and helps with pre-participation physicals. He is a graduate of Cal ('71) and UCSF Medical School and completed residency training at Northridge Medical Center. He has been in private practice in Berkeley and Lafayette since 1980 and has volunteered with our program since 1980. Many coaches and other staff of the athletic department select Dr. Iliff as their personal family physician.

Whitney Johnson, DDS, a dentist with the Cal Sports Medicine program, assists with making custom mouthguards for the student-athletes, and has been integral in helping develop a comprehensive dental sports program at Cal. A graduate of San Diego State University and the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, he maintains a private practice in esthetic, restorative and sports dentistry in Berkeley. Dr. Johnson has received his fellow designation in the Academy for Sports Dentistry, where he is on the board of directors. He is also a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists, the American and California Dental Associations, and President of the Berkeley Dental Society. He resides in Rockridge with his wife Beth Anderson, an epidemiologist at the UC-Berkeley School of Public Health, and their daughter Savannah.

Clement Jones, MD, is our orthopaedic spinal surgeon, and has cared for our student-athletes with neck and back injuries at IA clinic since 1995. He also assists in event coverage including football, and helps with pre-participation physicals. Dr. Jones is a graduate of Merrimack College, and Tufts Medical School in Boston. After completing a general surgery internship at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, he served 3 years on active duty in the Navy. He then completed his orthopaedic residency training and a spine surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University, as well as additional spine fellowship training at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic. He has been in private practice in San Francisco since 1992, and is a consultant to other regional Bay Area collegiate and professional teams. He played college football at Norwich University in Vermont, and semi-pro football for the Pensacola Florida Stars.

Gerald Keane, MD, has been involved with the Cal Sports Medicine program as a psychiatrist since 1992 and specializes in non-operative injuries of the spine and nerves. He sees student-athletes in IA clinic. A graduate of University of Rhode Island, and Brown University for medical school, Dr. Keane then received residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Stanford. In private practice in Redwood City, he is also an assistant clinical professor with the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford.

Maureen Lee, DPM, joined Cal's Sports Medicine program in the fall of 1998 as a podiatry consultant for IA clinic and preparticipation physicals. She graduated from UC-Davis before receiving her podiatric degree at the California College of Podiatric Medicine and completing a podiatric surgical residency at Camp Pendleton Naval Base. She is a diplomat, American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and primary podiatric medicine, and in private practice in San Francisco. Dr. Lee also serves as a consultant for San Francisco State University's teams.

Anthony Luke, MD, joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in the fall of 2003, and assists in IA clinic, pre-participation physicals and event coverage, including track and field and women's basketball. He attended the University of Toronto, Canada for his medical school and family practice residency. He then completed his fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Harvard at the Children's Hospital of Boston. After working at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario for 3 years, he has been the Director of Primary Care Sports Medicine at UCSF since 2003. He organizes the sports medicine care for the high schools in San Francisco (UCSF Play Safe program) and is a marathon medical director for races including the Nola Women's Marathon.

Jeffrey Mann, MD, has been an orthopedic foot and ankle consultant for Cal since 1997, and sees athletes at IA clinic and preparticipation physicals, and during event coverage including gymnastics. Dr. Mann has treated professional athletes from around the country. A native of Oakland, Dr. Mann graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before returning to California for medical school at UC-Davis and orthopedic residency at UCSF. He underwent 2 additional fellowship programs, one in sports medicine and one in foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Mann has authored book chapters and lectured at national meetings on orthopedic foot and ankle topics. He is in private practice in Oakland.

Mathias Masem, MD, is an orthopaedic consultant for hand, wrist, and upper extremity injuries, working at IA clinic, event coverage, and pre-participation physicals since 1995. He attended the University of Minnesota for medical school before heading west to train in orthopaedic surgery at UCSF. Dr. Masem then completed several orthopedic upper extremity, hand surgery, and micro surgery fellowships including work at the Institute for Biomechanics at the University of Bern, Switzerland and the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He began his practice in Oakland in 1987. Dr. Masem is presently an assistant clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at UCSF. He is a member of the teaching faculty at the UCSF Hand Clinic and is chief of the Division of Hand Surgery at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center.

Deirdre McLoughlin, MSPT, received her master's degree in physical therapy at Boston University in 1995. She has been involved in competitive rowing since 1990 and has been coaching both collegiate and now masters' rowing since 1995. She joined University Health Services in 2001 and the Cal Sports Medicine program in 2003. Her clinical interests include cervical and lumbar spine dysfunction, low back pain in rowers, mentoring and teaching students and interns, and the use of manual therapy techniques to treat orthopedic injuries in the high level athlete. In her spare time, she can be found on the water coaching or racing in her double. Formerly on staff at University Health Services, she is now in private practice in Berkeley, but continues to provide physical therapy services at the Haas training room.

In memory of Dr. Bill Olson, DPM, who passed away in 2004. He was a part of our sports medicine staff since 1990 and volunteered at IA clinic and pre-participation physicals as a podiatry consultant. After attending Drake University in Iowa, he came to the California College of Podiatric Medicine; then completed a podiatric surgery residency in Bellflower. He served as President of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. Dr. Olson published numerous articles and contributed to textbooks in sports medicine and biomechanics, and lectured at national and international medical conferences on topics related to lower extremity sports medicine and biomechanics. The William R. Olson Cal Sports Medicine Education Fund was established in his honor, and supports continuing education for the athletic training staff. Nina Patterson, MPT, OCS, is the Director of Sports & Orthopedic Leaders Physical Therapy, Inc. in Oakland. She is a board certified clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy as well as an Active Release Technique provider and instructor. She joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in 2004. She graduated from Samuel Merritt College in 1994 with a masters in physical therapy. Prior to that, she had obtained a bachelor of science in engineering from Cornell University ('85). She has special interests in biomechanics and movement analysis of sports and gait to improve performance of amateur as well as professional athletes. She continues to compete in bicycle racing.

Lynn Schankliess, MSPT, ATC, received her bachelor's degree in physiology/psychology from California State University, Long Beach and her master's degree in physical therapy from the University of Colorado. She is also a certified athletic trainer. Clinical interests include manual therapy techniques and lower extremity biomechanics. She is currently enrolled in the Polestar Pilates Rehabilitation Certification program. She likes to spend her time outdoors and competes in ultramarathons. After 9 years as part of the physical therapy staff at University Health Services, she opened a private practice in Albany, and continues to provide physical therapy services at the Stadium training room.

Timothy Shen, MD, is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and holds a subspecialty certification in pain management. He assists in pre-participation physicals and event coverage, including football, and has been seeing student-athletes at IA clinic for neck and back disorders since 2005. He attended medical school at Tufts University in Boston, completed a PM&R residency at the University of Michigan, and a spine and sports medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Dr. Shen specializes in performing minimally invasive spinal procedures under fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance. In private practice since 2001, Dr. Shen's office is located in Oakland.

Jon Sherwood, MSPT, ATC, CSCS, joined the Cal Sports Medicine program in 2005, and sees our student-athletes at the Stadium training room. Sherwood was an offensive lineman for the Golden Bears from 1984 to 1989 while completing his undergraduate degree in Physical Education. He then received a master's degree in Exercise Physiology from California State University, Chico and his master's of Science in Physical Therapy (MSPT) from Boston University. He earned his Athletic Training Certification (ATC) while serving as trainer for the Billings Bulls Junior -A-Hockey Team and the Billings Rimrockers IBA Basketball Team. Jon is a certified ASTYM provider and a certified clinical specialist in Orthopedics (OCS). He has worked as Director of Rehabilitation at California Sports and Orthopaedic Institute in Berkeley and is CEO of La Foot Plus/La Shoe Inc. and STK Human Performance and Physical Therapy in Sacramento. Sherwood enjoys cycling, skiing and spending time with his wife and their dog.

Paul D. Walton, DC, has been in private practice as a chiropractor since graduating in 1984 from Palmer College of Chiropractic West. In 1980, he obtained his bachelors of science in physical education from California State University, Hayward with an emphasis in exercise physiology, biomechanics and athletic training curriculum. Dr. Walton has continued his education with certification programs in conservative sports injury evaluation and management; Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner. Dr. Walton has been a faculty member at Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, California since 1988, teaching in the Outpatient clinic, chiropractic technique and continuing education departments. Dr. Walton has been working with Cal student-athletes since 2002, and sees them at the Haas training room. Dr. Walton's practice is in Orinda, CA

William Workman, MD, has been one of our orthopedic consultants since 2003. He sees student-athletes at the IA clinic, covers events including rugby, and assists with pre-participation physicals. A graduate of Cal and member of the 1988 College World Series team, Dr. Workman played professional baseball before completing his orthopedic residency at Yale University. After an additional sports medicine fellowship at Harvard Medical School, he entered private practice in Walnut Creek. Dr. Workman is founder and president of Walnut Creek Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, and awarded the 2001 Achilles Sports Medicine Research Award from the International Society of Knee Surgery, Arthroscopy, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.

Eric Yabu, DDS, joined our sports medicine program in the fall 2005. He assists with making custom mouthguards, and providing emergency care for the student-athletes. He has been integral in helping develop a comprehensive dental sports program at Cal including the coordination of a program which allows UCSF dental students to participate in the fabrication of mouthguards and examinations. A graduate of Cal and the UCSF School of Dentistry, he maintains an advanced technology practice on Park Boulevard in Oakland. Dr. Yabu is on faculty at UCSF and a member of the American and California Dental Associations and Academy of Sports Dentistry.

Becky Zachau, DPT, CSCS, ART, joined the Sports Medicine program in 2006, and sees our student-athletes at the Haas training room. She received her bachelor's degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology from Sonoma State University in 2002. Zachau then graduated in 2004 with masters and doctorate degrees in physical therapy from University of the Pacific. She currently works at Sport and Orthopedic Leaders Physical Therapy in Oakland, teaches at Samuel Merritt's physical therapy program, and works with the Newark Police and their Injury Prevention Program. Her interests include sports and pediatric therapy. She lives in Castro Valley and enjoys hammer throwing and anything that gives her an excuse to be outside.
